Manuals and notebooks from the Dyestuffs Division of the Organic Chemicals Dept. of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, 1924-1977.

These records were donated to Hagley by Harold P. Landerl and were received by the Manuscripts and Archives Department in 2008. The DuPont Dyestuffs records consist of notebooks and procedures on dyes dating 1924-1977. These describe the colors, uses, applications, tests, and fastness and dying properties for dyes manufactured by DuPont and its competitors. Some of the notebooks include textile and paper samples showing dye results and there is one notebook from the Newport Chemical Works, a company which was purchased by DuPont in 1931. These records provide technical information about DuPont's dye processes and compliment pamphlets published by the company's dyestuff department which are housed in Hagley's Imprints Department. One notebook contains a trade listing of all American made dyes and pigments; government statistics on dyes imported into the United States in 1972; a listing of DuPont fibers technical bulletins for 1977; a trade summary of all synthetic fibers produced in the U.S. in 1974; guidelines on the use of DuPont dye trademarks; an information guide on color and its measurement. Another contains contains spectral curves and Klopman letters for DuPont dyes ranging from A (acetamine) to L (Latyl).

By the late 1920s DuPont was one of the four major U.S. dye producers and controlled 25 percent of the market. In 1931, the departme...

The family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 and during the 19th century it became one of the United States' most important manufacturers of black powder. In 1902 three younger du Pont cousins: T. Coleman, Alfred I., and Pierre S. took over the company and within three years succeeded in bringing 75% of the American explosives industry (which at that time included black powder, dynamite, and smokeless powder) under their control. During the first decade of the...
